How Severance Pay Works by Country
United States: No federal mandate for severance, but WARN Act requires 60 days notice for mass layoffs. Many states have additional protections.
United Kingdom: Statutory Redundancy Pay based on age, weekly pay (capped), and years of service. Formula: 0.5 week per year under 22, 1 week per year 22-40, 1.5 weeks per year over 41.
Canada: Employment Standards Act sets minimums (varies by province). Common law "reasonable notice" often exceeds statutory minimums significantly.
Australia: National Employment Standards provide redundancy pay table based on years of continuous service (4-16 weeks depending on tenure).
Germany: Kündigungsschutzgesetz protects against unfair dismissal. Severance often negotiated at 0.5 monthly salary per year of service.
France: Code du Travail mandates minimum severance based on seniority and reference salary. Collective agreements may provide better terms.
